Gió Nam Múa Lân pride ourselves on being a community-based team, and therefore are dedicated to teaching anyone in the Southern California area who are willing to learn and continue the art and tradition of lion dance. We are always looking for fresh faces to join our family and everyone is welcome! There is absolutely no experience required; all we ask of prospective members is an open mind and a willingness to try your best. While most of our members are active UC Irvine students, you do not need to be a student to join. There are no membership fees or requirements.
Lion dance discipline extends far beyond just the scope of dancing for entertainment. Lion dance was traditionally considered a form of martial arts, although most would not associate the two, and as such we structure our lessons not only to teach the dance itself, but also to emphasize balance, strength, endurance, respect, and unity.
Why lion dance?
Are you interested in connecting with Chinese and Vietnamese culture? How about learning some martial arts skills? Improving your balance, health, and mental strength? Want to try something new and unique? Whatever your motivations are, lion dance is the perfect opportunity to get a good workout and learn and promote culture and tradition, while also making lifelong friends and performing all over Southern California.
We accept and teach students of all ages, from elementary school kids all the way through working adults, as well as those from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds. You do not have to be Chinese or Vietnamese to join!
